Message which one you have and the symptoms of a failing gauge.

The circuitry on the speedometer board does three things. It controls the gauge needle movement, the odometer motor for mileage and it sends the speed signal to the ECU.

Symptoms of a failing gauge are...
1. The gauge needle may not display the correct speed. It may act erratic such as slow movement, jump all around, move all the way to the right or not move at all.

2. The odometer will not work correctly or not at all.

3. With no speed signal to the ECU you may have loss of cruise control, a hard steering problem, HICAS malfunction or transmission shifting problems with an automatic transmission.

When the speedometer goes bad any one or a combination of the three things it does can go bad including complete failure.

Using these pictures is the most easiest and accurate way of determining which type of gauge is in your cluster, although the hardest part will be removing your cluster to compare it with these pictures. In most cases you can also determine which type gauge you have by combining the year your car was manufactured with whether it's a TT or an NA. That is, if it still has the original gauge cluster.

The main cause of failure with the type 1 and type 2 gauges are complete solder failure. To repair them to a reliable condition requires a complete rebuild of the gauge in terms of removing as much of the old solder as possible and using a higher grade solder to rebuild them with. This requires removing most of the components from the board. Replacing all the electrolytic capacitors is also recommended.

Type 3 boards are known to fail due to having a form of advancing corrosion which can spread over much of the board. Some of these boards are repairable depending on the state of the corrosion but in most cases the repair will require replacing the board.
